York Dales Tour – 22 Mar 2015

Escape to an area of outstanding natural beauty and visit one of England’s finest cities, all at great value for money. The Yorkshire Dales boasts a huge variety of natural features, wildlife and a rich cultural heritage. It is also an area featured in many popular television series and films, more recently ITV’s “The Dales” which followed presenter Adrian Edmondson as he toured around and met the incredible people who live there. During our 2 day break we take a scenic tour of this beautiful area, stopping at three of the most popular places. On our first day we visit the historic city of York which has been voted as ‘The UK’s Best City’ for two consecutive years, with more attractions per square mile than any other destination in the UK. And with our best price this is the perfect opportunity to take a well deserved break with a friend or family member.

Itinerary

Day 1: York

Your holiday begins when you board our private coach in the early morning and travel to York where there are a whole host of attractions to enjoy. From its Roman beginnings, York has been occupied by the Vikings and the Saxons and still boasts many of its ancient features from these times. Architectural wonders include York Minster, the largest medieval gothic cathedral in northern Europe which towers over the city, Barley Hall, Cliffords Tower and Fairfax House to name but a few and you can climb the city walls to see panoramic views of the area. There are also numerous museums to satisfy your curiosity, including the National Railway Museum, the world’s biggest and best railway museum, and the Castle Museum which depicts 600 years of life in York. You can even be transported back to the Viking Age at JORVIK, wander the terrifying York Dungeons or discover the world famous treats and sweets that came from the city at York’s Chocolate Story. If shopping is on your agenda then you will be spoilt for choice as there are over 2000 shops, many of which are independent and unique to York. One of the prettiest streets, Stonegate, runs from the Minster to the River Ouse and has many exclusive shops. Be sure to take a stroll along the world famous Shambles, a narrow, medieval thoroughfare with flag stones and overhanging timber framed houses and when you’re in need of a break, you will find plenty of places to eat and drink around the city. After our visit we continue to our hotel for a relaxing evening with dinner included.

Day 2: Skipton – Grassington – Pateley Bridge

After your included breakfast we check out of our hotel and set off on a scenic tour of the Yorkshire Dales, an area of outstanding natural beauty with lush green valleys and white limestone cliffs. We make our first stop in Skipton, known as the southern gateway to the Yorkshire Dales and home to one of the most complete medieval castles in England. This market town became extremely popular for trading sheep and woollen goods until it emerged as a mill town due to its location on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, one of the longest manmade waterways in the country which stretches 127 miles. Today it is a lovely tourist destination where you can explore the bustling high street or enjoy a peaceful walk through Skipton Woods in the heart of the town. After our visit we venture into the Yorkshire Dales aboard our coach stopping in Grassington and Pateley Bridge. Grassington is a lovely village in the Yorkshire Dales, with its pretty cobbled square and beautiful setting above the River Wharfe, whilst the picturesque village of Pateley Bridge has been the inspiration for many artists, writers and film and television producers due to its stunning location in the heart of Nidderdale. After our tour we set off on the return journey, arriving back to Cambridge in the mid to late evening.
