Lake District Walking Tour – 19-21 Jun 2015

Few places can measure up to the exquisite beauty of the Lake District, with its rolling pastures, high peaks, and calm waters. By far and away the best means of exploring is on foot, so join our walking holiday which is especially for softies and takes you through one of the regions finest valleys – Great Langdale, with its pretty village of Elterwater and the magnificent Langdale Pikes, before exploring the historic grounds of Rydal Hall and following peaceful lanes to Ambleside, at the head of Lake Windermere, where we seek out a spectacular waterfall. Along the way we learn about the fascinating history and wildlife of this corner of England, as well as visit the old market town of Kendal. Easy terrain and plenty of time makes this a relaxing holiday.

Day 1: Kendal

Your holiday begins when you board on the coach in the early morning for the journey to Kendal, making appropriate stops en-route. This old market town is known as the southern gateway to the Lakes and has a good reputation for speciality Lakeland produce, the most famous being Kendal Mint Cake. There are several historic buildings scattered around the town, including the ruins of a 14th century castle which was once the home of Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s sixth and last wife. You will also find plenty of shops from high street names to quaint boutiques and branching off the High Street are dozens of ‘yards’ that host a wide variety of restaurants, pubs and olde worlde tearooms. After some free time we continue to our hotel for your included evening meal.

Day 2: Great Langdale guided walk

After your included breakfast we travel to the picturesque village of Elterwater, which translates from the Old Norse (Viking) as Swan Lake and is home to one of the smaller lakes of the region. We meet our guides and begin our classic walk up one of the Lake District’s finest valleys. As we walk we will be surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery, including the peaks of Bow Fell, Crinkle Craggs and the famous Langdale Pikes. We stop for lunch (not included) at the Stickle Barn Tavern which is owned and run by the National Trust. Our return walk down the valley follows the course of Great Langdale Beck, where we can look out for trout in the crystal clear waters. We finish our walk back at Elterwater where you can enjoy a little free time before we return to our hotel for your included evening meal. Today’s walk is approximately 6 miles long with track ways and some uphill stretches.

Day 3: Rydal to Ambleside guided walk

After your included breakfast we are taken by coach to meet our guides in the historic grounds of Rydal Hall. There’s a lot to see at the beginning of this walk including carefully restored gardens at Rydal Hall and a window with probably the best view in the Lake District. We then follow peaceful country lanes towards Ambleside, along the banks of the River Rothay. On reaching Ambleside, we’ll visit and have the chance to photograph the famous ‘Bridge House’ before making our way up to the nearby Stock Ghyll Force waterfall. We stop for lunch (not included) in Ambleside and enjoy a little free time before setting off on the return journey, arriving back in your local area in the mid to late evening. Today’s walk is approximately 3 miles long, following track ways and lanes with some uphill stretches.
