It is originated in China in the 13th century and is translated as supreme ultimate fist. It is believed to have been developed by the legendary Taoist sage Chang San-Feng of the Song Dynasty. But it only became really famous when Yang Lu-Chan became a Tai Chi, martial art instructor of the Imperial Royal Family.

Tai Chi is often promoted and practiced as a martial arts therapy for keeping health and longevity. Tai Chi was based upon a ‘soft’ or internal approach, rather than a ‘hard’ external one. It uses graceful, flowing movements, combined with the power of breath to bring balance and alignment to mind, body and spirit.

Benefits
Advantages of practising Tai Chi Chuan are good exercise which enables us to develop a healthy body as well as an alert mind. It is a system of exercise suitable for people of all ages. This exercise requires little or no special equipment. It can be practised in a relatively small area either indoors or outdoors.

Scientific research conducted at the Medical Academy of Shanghai, the Tangshan Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital in New York City has shown that tai chi chuan stimulates the central nervous system, lowers blood pressure, relieves stress and gently tones muscles without strain. It also enhances digestion, elimination of wastes and the circulation of blood. Moreover, tai chi’s rhythmic movements massage the internal organs and improve their functionality.

Perhaps tai chi’s greatest attribute, however, is the fact it channels the flow of chi, intrinsic energy through the body’s meridians. According to traditional Chinese medicine, as long as this flow is uninhibited, a person will remain healthy. If the flow of chi becomes obstructed or unbalanced, illness will result. The correct practice of tai chi chuan guides the individual’s chi through the meridians and restores its balance throughout the body. None of the aforementioned exercises offers any of these benefits.

According to Tai Chi theory, the abilities of the human body are capable of being developed beyond their commonly perceived potential. Civilisation can be improved to the highest levels of achievement. Creativity has no boundaries whatsoever, and the human mind should have no restrictions or barriers placed upon its capabilities.

Is it for you?
Two studies involving Tai Chi have been reported by scientists in the frailty reduction programme sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. In these studies, the Tai Chi participants (all aged 70 or over) took more deliberate steps, improved their walking speed and had a lower rate of falling. They also reported a lower fear of falling – and displayed more confidence and an increased sense of being able to do all that they’d like.

Clothing or Equipment
No special equipment is required to practice Tai Chi. Students are not obliged to wear any uniform in the Tai Chi class. Just make sure you are wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows for a wide range of motion. However student would be required to wear the proper Tai Chi uniform when performing Tai Chi for the public.

It is advisable for student to wear white socks and black shoes. It is important to use suitable shoes that are flat, flexible and comfortable.

Tai Chi Classes
The Chinese Community Centre offers classes run by qualifie instructors (Tai Chi Grand Master)and provides information about Tai Chi Chuan. We offer regular classes every Sunday and discussions on the philosophy and history of Tai Chi Chuan. The Tai Chi taught in the Chinese Community Centre is that of the popular Traditional Yang style long form.

Tai Chi One-to-One Tuition
Individual one to one instruction in Tai Chi Chuan is available on request in the Cambridge Chinese Community Centre.

Wing Chun Sample Clip:
[wpvideo BISlFW3G]

Tai Chi Sample Clip:
[wpvideo cxdbM6nr]

Learn Traditional Yang Style Tai Chi Class Start Date Time Cost Beginners Every Sunday from 1pm to 3pm cost £3.00 per session for member and £5.00 per session for non-members.
